I am sure that you would agree that the novelty of lockdown has worn off, and the reality of the our unsteady circumstances have started to feed our insecurities and anxieties. Everything seems to be changing and there are so many opinions, theories and uncertainty of who’s telling the truth and who’s not telling the truth. In this unsettling time, I would like to encourage you.

So, for this reason, I would like to give you five very brief things that are unchanging. Five brief things that you can actually hang on to and be certain of.

1. God.

Last Sunday we saw that Jesus is sitting and ruling on the throne! He does not change. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” In an ever-changing, unsettling world He is your constant. If you know Jesus and if you are known by Him, then you know He is sitting on the throne. That’s awesome! Draw near to Him and He’ll draw near to you. That’s how you can keep going – God is unchanging and you know Him.

2. His Word.

There are so many voices screaming at us, so many conspiracy theories – our thoughts are all over the place! Our head gets heavy with all this information. Who do we trust? Here it is: the Bible says, “the grass withers the flowers fade, but the Word of God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8). If we want certainty and stability in a world of opinion and voices, be listening to God’s Word. My advice is to get rid of the clutter and focus in on listening to God’s Word.

3. His Love.

1 Chronicles 16:34 says, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!” Then, if you look further “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6). COVID-19 is not a sign that God doesn’t love us. God’s love endures forever. He is here with us. He has not finished what He is doing in us. He will always love us. He will even use lockdown to shape us to be beautiful human beings, made in His image. Be reminded of that today – God loves you.

4. His Mission.

2 Peter 3:9 says “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” That is God’s heart. God’s timing is His. He will bring people to Himself when He decides to. Just because we’re in lockdown – just because we can’t meet together – doesn’t mean the mission of God is not moving forward. I’ve been so encouraged that God can even use something like COVID-19 to draw many people to Himself. So, God is still on the move, don’t forget that!

5. His Future

God has caused us to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never fade, will not perish and is kept in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:3-4). Heaven is ours! What a wonderful truth! Further, in Hebrews 13:14 we read that “for here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.” The future is set and it is ours. Jesus has given it to us and He is keeping heaven for us! The city we live in at the moment is crumbling, but there is one that will not crumble and it is kept by Jesus for us. This truth will never change, so hang onto Jesus’ promises.

God. His Word. His love. His mission. His future. These are all certain, strong and immovable realities. So let’s stop listening to the junk that is out there, let’s not be thrown by everything that comes our way, let’s stop panicking about the future and let’s stop worrying! Rather, let’s turn back to God and find stability in the one place that is always stable – with God, through His Son Jesus.
